Biography
Hilary Brunot's father was a step-brother of Lafayette. In 1814 Hilary was a graduate of one of the earliest classes at West Point. He was wounded at the end of the War of 1812, then spent several years posted in Michigan and on recruitment service. He was at Fort Howard in Wisconsin in 1820 through 1821. Some reports also indicate that he was at Fort Snelling, Mackinaw, Green Bay, Newport, and Pittsburgh before 1825. He left the army, began manufacturing white lead in Pittsburgh and became wealthy. A "William Brunot," signature on a Miami treaty, is presumably a typo for "Hilary Brunot" who signed another treaty at about the same time in the same place.
