Biography
Archibald Gamble was a clerk of the St. Louis Circuit Court in 1818. That year, his brother Hamilton moved to Smithton (present-day Columbia), a town formed by the Smithton Land Company. When General Lafayette visited St. Louis in 1825, Gamble was a member of the welcoming committee, which included many treaty signers. As a Freemason, Gamble was the Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of Missouri and officially welcomed Lafayette to the St. Louis lodge. In 1825, Gamble was also the secretary to a commission in charge of surveying the Santa Fe Road from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
