Biography
Orphaned at the age of five, Andrew J. Donelson was raised by his aunt Rachel and her husband Andrew Jackson. He attended Cumberland College and graduated from West Point in 1820. He spent two years as aide-de-camp to Jackson in the Seminole War, then resigned from the military to study law at Transylvania University. Donelson was Jackson's​ private secretary throughout Jackson's te​​rms as President, and developed a plantation, Tulip Grove, adjacent to Jackson's Her​​mitage plantation. In 1851, Donelson became became the editor of the Washington Union, and in 1856 was the Vice Presidential nominee for​ the America​n Party.​ He was a member of the Jackson/Butler kinship group.​​
