Biography
​Henry Dearborn studied medicine and commenced practice in Nottingham Square, Maryland in 1772. During the Revolutionary War, he was a captain in Stark’s Regiment, participating in battles at Bunker Hill and Quebec. He was taken prisoner but released on parole in 1776. He joined Washington’s staff in 1781 as deputy quartermaster general with the rank of colonel, and served at Yorktown. Dearborn moved to Monmouth, Massachusetts (now Maine) in 1784, where he became a brigadier general in the militia and was appointed United States Marshal for the district of Maine in 1789. He was elected to Congress and served a term from 1793 to 1797. He was appointed Secretary of War by Jefferson and held that position from 1801 to 1809. He held an appointment from James Madison as collector of the port of Boston from 1809 to 1812. During the War of 1812 Dearborn was the senior major general in the United States Army. He was Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal from 1822 to 1824.​​
