Biography
Gabriel S. Chouteau was a son of prominent fur trader Auguste Chouteau. In 1816, he began trading among the Osage and Kansa Indians, first at his cousin Paul Ligeste Chouteau's post at Marais des Cygnes, then with his cousin Francois. He was known as"Cerre," after his mother's family, and signed a treaty using that name; the signature of Gabriel G. Chouteau in another treaty is presumably a typo for Gabriel S. Beginning in 1822, he began trading on the Upper Mississippi. When his father died, Gabriel took over the family flour mill in St. Louis. He was a member of the Chouteau/Clark kinship group.
