Biography
​Elisha Smith ​Lee graduated from Union College and became the first judge of Monroe County, New York. In 1840, he moved to Detroit, where he worked as a lawyer and judge. He also invested in the Detroit and Birmingham Plank Road Company. He was “a recognized power in Michigan Masonry." In 1847, he became the Worshipful Grand Master of the Michigan Grand Lodge. The following year, he became the Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter R​oyal Arch Masons of Michigan. In 1853, his friend, Governor Robert McLelland, became the Secretary of the Interior and secured a position for Lee in the War Department. Lee died in Washington during his tenure there.
